The Weston Silver Band traces
its continuous history back to 1921 when it was created as the Weston
Boys’ Band. The WSB’s instrumentation is modeled on
the British-style Brass Band with 27 brass players plus percussion.
This configuration allows the band to present an extensive repertoire:
from Big Band swing and jazz to favourites from Broadway and Hollywood,
as well as traditional marches and contemporary Brass Band repertoire.
Now in its 89th
season, and under
the baton
of Music Director Larry Shields, the bands membership is made up of
accomplished brass players from the GTA and surrounding areas. Based in
Weston
( Toronto),
the band
presents a concert series during the
fall and winter season at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, as well as
a
busy
performance schedule in venues throughout the GTA and surrounding
areas. Recognizing
its historic connection to the British Isles, The WSB maintains and
fosters
close ties to many composers and bands in the United Kingdom,
and features
soloists such as Richard Marshall, Principal Cornet, Black Dyke
Band .
Through
excellent
artistic and educational performances for musicians and communities,
the WSB seeks to promote the brass band tradition as an important part
of the cultural heritage of this province as well as a dynamic and
unique voice for contemporary composers and arrangers.
